Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

ABS is very popular due to its excellent toughness, rigidity and heat resistance. It is widely used to manufacture a variety of products, including automotive parts, medical devices and consumer electronics. ABS is a mixture of two or more monomers, usually acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. The combination of these monomers gives ABS its excellent properties and makes it an attractive material for a wide range of applications.

Possible applications:

Polymer ABS has a wide range of applications, including:

- Automotive and transportation components, such as dashboards, bumpers and vehicle interiors.

- Electronic components, such as computer and television housings and components.

- Household appliances, e.g. refrigerator panels and washing machine parts.

- Industrial applications, e.g. parts and equipment for chemical plants.

- Sporting goods, e.g. golf clubs, skis, snowboards and field hockey sticks.

Processing methods:

The most common processing methods for ABS include injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming and 3D printing. In injection molding, the ABS material is heated and injected into a mold, creating the desired shape. In extrusion, the ABS material is pressed through a nozzle to obtain a uniform shape. In thermoforming, the polymer is heated to a temperature at which it is soft enough to be molded into the desired shape. Finally, 3D printing involves using a 3D printer to apply layers of ABS material to create a 3D object.

Market forecasts:

The global ABS market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.75% from 2020 to 2027, reaching a value of USD 17.4 billion by 2027. Key drivers for this growth include the increasing demand for ABS in the automotive, consumer electronics and medical technology industries as well as the increasing use of ABS in 3D printing. Rising demand for ABS in the construction and infrastructure industry. The increasing use of ABS to manufacture lightweight and durable materials for automotive applications is also expected to drive the growth of the market.

Outlook:

The global polymer ABS market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 6.5% during the forecast period 2021-2026. Factors such as growing demand for polymer ABS from the electronics industry and rising demand for automobiles are driving the growth of the market.
